Guest Post by Annie Berube: Yoga in Rwanda (Part 1)

December 9, 2010

Elation Centre yogini, Annie Berube, tells us about her experience doing yoga in Kigali and about the amazing women she met along the way.

So I packed my yoga books, Sylvie’s yoga teacher’s manual, a dozen yoga mats and my little family and we were off to Kigali, Rwanda at the end of August. I had just completed some of Sylvie’s training before leaving and I had no idea how yoga would fit into my new life in Kigali. The first month in Kigali was challenging to say the least, but finding myself alone on my yoga mat everyday was familiar and comforting. I finally heard of Project Air and contacted the project director, Deirdre. After a brief chat she invited me to attend one of her classes.

We met on what is possibly Kigali’s worst dirt road (I was grateful for that ridiculous huge four wheel drive I am driving here) and Deirdre briefly explained who we were about to meet: HIV-positive women, all of whom have been victims of sexual violence during the genocide, who are now owners in their sewing cooperative. They have been practicing Ashtanga Yoga with Deirdre for almost three years. Wow, heavy, I  thought. I was quite nervous about how they would receive me. Deirdre assured me that they loved to be touched and have adjustments during their practice and urged me to jump right in.

So we walked in the seamstress shop, Deirdre was greeted by smiles, kisses and hugs, it is clear that she has a very special bond with these women. I got a few hellos and handshakes. We cleared space on the outside veranda and unrolled the mats. After a warm up they launched into their first Sun Salutations, I was getting ready to go adjust some downward dogs but rather was astounded to find almost perfect alignment everywhere I looked! Wow. Similarly as we progressed through the Asanas I found myself tip- toeing around like a useless little mouse, I couldn’t believe the level of yoga proficiency I was witnessing. In the middle of the Kinyarwanda chatter (the language of Rwanda) I even heard some women shouting “Mula Bandha” to one another. Really ?

Here are women who are very ill, work 16 hour-days, who have been through unthinkable trauma and probably don’t have enough to eat, yet find the energy to come to the mat and practice with a level of dedication we may not always find amongst healthy-wealthy yoga students who practice in expensive outfits in dark studios with soft music… Yoga in Kigali has a lot to teach me.

We recommend you visit the website as its very inspiring. The service they are providing supports humanity in so many ways.

Hydration

December 7, 2010

Anyone who has been to my classes lately has heard me talk about staying hydrated. Recently, a friend was given  the following calculation by her chiropractor to define how much water each individual needs:

your body weight (pounds) divided by two = amount of water needed daily (ounces)

I remember learning this in my nutrition classes and spoke with a couple of other nutritionists who also agree with this calculation.

I am an avid reader and love to read different perspectives. Although the above is a great way to approach hydration, it’s not necessarily always that simple. Apparently, we eat an average of 5 pounds of food per day.

  • If your diet consists of an abundance of fruits and veggies: 4 to 4.5 pounds of this is water.
  • If your diet consists of meat, refined flour products, and so forth:  well….not so much water.

You also need to look at how much coffee you drink, which is quite dehydrating, and how much you perspire (if you are man) and how much you  glow (if you are a woman), as this also impacts how much water you need to replenish.

The Mayo Clinic lists the following signs as mild dehydration:

  • dry, sticky mouth
  • sleepiness or tiredness
  • thirst
  • decreased urine output
  • dark urine
  • muscle weakness
  • headache
  • dizziness or lightheadedness
  • dry skin

It’s very easy to get dehydrated, yet staying hydrated is free, calorie free, and incredibly supportive for physical and mental health.

I recommend reading the following articles from the Globe and Mail:

Rethink how your rehydrate when exercising

What kind of sports drink will keep my hydrated?

They are educating, empowering, and enriching. Thank you, Patricia, for passing them on.
